Chapter Twelve

“Cyndi, I know you were ready to head home,” Will said late Tuesday. “But I want to talk to you about taking on some bigger stories.” He’d been watching for her most of the afternoon, but she’d been out on an interview. Luckily, he’d caught her when she popped in.

The intern put her enormous, tan purse on the floor and scooted forward in her chair, closer to his desk.

A positive sign, as if she was eager to make up for her last big story, the one she’d completely botched. No. He shouldn’t think like that. He had to help her succeed, not just for the sake of the News, but because he was supposed to be teaching her about reporting in the real world.

“With Russell leaving, I’m going to ask you to cover a few of the regular meetings he’s been handling.” Will checked his wall calendar. “We’ve got three times a month when there are two important meetings on one night. I normally cover one, but I can’t do both.”

Cyndi’s eyes grew wider, and she gave a short, jerky nod. “I can do this, Will. I know I messed things up before, but I’ll do better.”

A bit of the tension in his shoulders eased. See? This could work. “The first meeting is tomorrow night. I’ll handle planning and zoning. I want you to cover the school board. It should be routine, but you never know.”

She nodded again, so vigorously that her frizzy bangs bounced.

“Russell’s already left to pack for his workshop, but check in his desk for a file on the school board. He should at least have old agendas that you can take home to read. Tomorrow, go through the back issues upstairs. The fourth Thursday of every month there should be a story on the school board’s meeting the night before. Read the past three or four months and read last August. Most of what the school board does is cyclical.”

“Okay,” she said.

“I’m sure you’ll do a great job.”

“Thanks.” She bounced up and hurried out the door.

Will watched her go. He must have sounded more confident than he felt.

He picked up the editorial he was writing. He’d read it one last time before he grabbed dinner and went to the park board meeting, a meeting that unfortunately would run about three hours. It always did, thanks to two board members who liked to hear themselves talk and a president who didn’t stop them. Will would come in early tomorrow to write it up. By ten o’clock tonight, he would have had his fill for the day of being the editor of the local paper. He—

The fax machine on the side table let out a series of beeps, and a light on its side began to flash. He laid the editorial on the desk and got up to see what was coming in.

The cover sheet had a scribbled note from his buddy Andy over in Wichita. “Been out of town on vacation. Just got your message last night.
